How 3 men on a sick leave enlightened me

A couple of days back, I fell down in office. Yes, literally I tripped & fell hurting my knees badly. The incident taught me two things, first was to pay more attention to my surroundings while walking & second was the power of the attention & care one receives when one is down. The knee also forced me to take a sick leave today.

The best way in which I could move my attention from the pain was youtube.I had recently read the "Last Lecture" & thought it would be great if I saw the video on youtube.

"When the student is ready, the teacher appears", this is a very famous quote & I saw it coming true for myself today. Three men from three different geographies , situations & backgrounds changed the way I look at life. One was facing terminal cancer, other was born without limbs & the last one suffers from progeria. Here is what I learnt from them.
  • Prof Randy Pausch : Prof Pausch had delivered the "Last Lecture" at Carnegie Mellon University just months before his battle ended with pancreatic cancer. I had read somewhere that some people are always alive, it is just impossible to imagine them as lifeless. After 5 years of his demise, Prof Pausch has become one of the immortal souls whom millions of people like me will always look up to for inspiration.
Please see the video of the last lecture https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ji5_MqicxSo. It will be an experience of a lifetime, one that make you inspired to move beyond your hurdles & achieve your dreams without taking your life for granted.

It can also give you handy tips about how to laugh away your calamities, having a clarity of expression & also the million of ways in which you could make the most of your life.

  • Nick Vujicic    After the Last Lecture, there was a video that caught my attention. It had a title "LOOK AT YOURSELF AFTER WATCHING THIS", puzzled at the title I went & watched it. After 4 mins of the video I was having goosebumps & tears in my eyes. Tears not out sadness or pity, tears because of the power of one's belief in oneself and god. This video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Gc4HGQHgeFE  is about Nick Vujicic, a person born without limbs but with a everlasting smile.
In the video Nick gave the powerful message of being grateful for what one has, many times we encounter people who are drowned in self pity, fretting over miniscule issues & becoming oblivious to smiling. You have to see the video to see his positivity, the way he has embraced life, the way he is helping many overcome their inhibitions. His impeccable comic timing & his ability to smile make him an icon, one that truly deserves to be.

  • Sam Berns An interesting thumbnail of a Ted Talk caught my attention. It was titled "My philosophy for a happy life: Sam Berns " https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=36m1o-tM05g. Ted Talks are enchanting I believe, they captivate, inspire & delight. But this Ted talk was with a difference.
It was by a 17 year old gifted boy who is diagnosed with Progeria, many of you who have seen Amitabh Bachchan in Paa can relate to it. Many of us are always running, not the marathons but the race of life. Most of us are chasing happiness , but Sam put forward three simple principles for his Happy life. First was to focus on what he can do rather than what he cant, second was surrounding himself with his loved ones & the third one was always having something to look forward to.

After nursing the wound in my knee, taking leave & complaining  about the pain, here I was all startled. I imagined myself as a 0.000000000000000000000000000000000000...1 % of a tiny dot in the universe where I had so much to learn. I can guarantee jealousy, gossips, whining, rants, brooding, hopelessness & any negativity will melt away if one sees these three men on youtube.

Calamities sometimes occur to great souls, but within calamities also they find meaning & propagate it for the greater good. The duty of the other souls is to learn from them & move towards the path of enlightenment. The medium might be books, you tube, road side hoarding or any thing, what is worthwhile is the precious lessons they hold.
